"Sharp-eyed yet tender observations about the beauty and darkness below the surface of marriage, faith, and family."
Marcela Landres, Latinidad
"The sacraments in this book favor concrete realities over spiritual illusions, mimosa trees over the trees of Eden, Wonder Bread over the broken body of Christ. Here, a father's belt buckle embodies more consequence than a crucifix hanging on a wall. In poem after poem, what Mendoza does is dig down deep into the bedrock of childhood, divinity, landscape, and marriage in hopes of unearthing what might truly save: language finely attuned to the actualities of this world. Such consolations are hard won."
Timothy Liu, author of Bending the Mind Around the Dream's Blown Fuse and Polytheogamy
