"Sharp-eyed yet tender observations about the beauty and darkness below the surface of marriage, faith, and family."
Marcela Landres, Latinidad
"The sacraments in this book favor concrete realities over spiritual illusions, mimosa trees over the trees of Eden, Wonder Bread over the broken body of Christ. Here, a father's belt buckle embodies more consequence than a crucifix hanging on a wall. In poem after poem, what Mendoza does is dig down deep into the bedrock of childhood, divinity, landscape, and marriage in hopes of unearthing what might truly save: language finely attuned to the actualities of this world. Such consolations are hard won."
Mission: Through workshops, symposia, and public readings, CantoMundo provides a space for the creation, documentation, and critical analysis of Latina/o poetry.
Description: The CantoMundo Master Poetry Workshop is a three-day retreat that develops, sustains, and supports a diverse community of Latina/o poets. Faculty are invited to each teach a three-hour craft workshop that covers a particular element of poetic craft that is of interest to the instructor. CantoMundo also includes guest lectures, readings, and book-signings that are open to the public.
Guzmán Mendoza's essay, "Las Otras" appears in, Wise Latinas, a collection of personal essays addressing the varied landscape of the Latina experience in higher education. For some Latinas, college, where they are vastly underrepresented, is the first time they are immersed in American culture outside their homes—and where the values of two cultures often clash. Wise Latinas is in part a response to this widening gap.
